POLYMELT America makes socket fusion of our polypropylene (PP-R) piping systems as simple and easy as possible for our customers. We’re happy to set up training for clients new to the process. Socket fusion is quick and easy to learn as long as you review and follow the full installation instructions provided by POLYMELT and the fusion machine manufacturer before proceeding with installation. Each installer must ensure that any installation complies with all local plumbing and building codes.

If you’re unfamiliar with socket fusion using PP-R piping, here are the eight steps you’ll need to learn:

Step 1: Clean and cut the pipe.
When cutting the pipe, ensure that it remains round and does not get flattened into an oval. Once cut, clean all surfaces with 90% isopropyl alcohol.

Step 2: Inspect the cut.
A good cut is smooth, square, and has no dirt, cracks, or stress marks inside or outside the pipe.

Step 3: Measure the pipe insertion depth.
Prior to installing, measure the insertion depth from the end of the pipe using the marking guide provided by POLYMELT. Mark the depth with a felt-tipped pen.

Step 4: Prepare the fusion tool.
Install the appropriate fusion head for the pipe and fitting on the fusion iron, then plug it in and allow it to reach appropriate temperature—around 500° F.

Step 5: Heat the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting.
Heat your pipe and fitting using the timetable provided by POLYMELT, following the heating time appropriate for the ambient temperature. A bead will form near the fusion heads and become shiny as the pipe and fitting become ready to fuse.

Step 6: Insert the pipe into the fitting.
At the conclusion of the heating time, remove the pipe and fitting from the heating iron and squarely insert the pipe into the fitting, pushing until the bead formed on the pipe during heating (near insertion mark) meets the fitting. Once the rings meet, you will have maximum of 5–15 seconds to make any adjustments to the alignment.

Step 7: Allow the welded connection to cool.
Hold piping steady for the full duration of the immobility time.

Step 8: Verify the connection.
Both PP-R rings formed during heating should be visible and joined around the connection. Once cooled, pressure-test all connections.
